Meet Susana!

Susana Ku, Registered Midwife

Hello!

My name is Susana Ku. I identify myself as Latino/Asian, because my mother is Peruvian and my father is Chinese. I am a Peruvian and Canadian registered midwife. I hold a Master’s Degree in Sexual and Reproductive Health, and I am currently pursuing  a PhD in Global Health at McMaster University. Before joining the Canadian Midwifery workforce, I worked in Peru as a midwife at different communities and health facilities. I embraced that experience, as it is close to where half of my heritage belongs. As you can imagine, I speak Spanish in addition to English. I am in the process of learning French, but at very slow motion. I can understand a bit of Cantonese (Chinese dialect).

I love learning different languages and cultures. One of my favorite hobbies is spending time with my family; time is a treasure when you are midwife, so I “collect” time to spend it with the people I love the most. I am a mother of two very little humans, who I adore seeing growth. I have an extremely supportive partner and we both moved to Sarnia in 2014 to make it our new home.

I personally, consider that being in this profession is a privilege because it allows us to work with families in probably the most vulnerable stage of their life. I love seeing them blossom into a new version of themselves and I have a lot of respect to the way they see their own life and wishes for this new journey. I strongly believe that people have the right to live to their full potential and that includes having the right to have a transformative accompanied experience before, during and after the event of birthing a new life.

I am looking forward to work with many lovely families in our catchment area.
